Original Universe
Canon Point: About 6 months after Sozin’s Comet.
Background Link: Sokka’s Wiki Link
Personality:
While trapped with apparently no escape, and asking the universe for a way out of his mess, Sokka described his whole identity as being “the meat and sarcasm guy,” referring in part, perhaps, to his role in his group of friends. Another time he described himself as “the plan guy” and has been described by his sister as “the complaining guy”. All are pretty accurate depictions of how Sokka is outwardly; sarcastic, prone to complaints, gluttonous and sharp witted with a knack for figuring things out. His sarcasm and wit, as well as his frequent complaints (accompanied by self inflicted bad luck much of the time), come into play a lot throughout the series as a form of comic relief with Sokka. Though it also soon becomes apparent that there is far more to him than his comic antics and jokes.
When Sokka was nine years old, there was a raid on his tribe and his mother was killed. Not long after this his father had to leave to fight in the war, leaving Sokka and his sister, Katara, in the care of their Gran and – with all the men off to fight – giving Sokka the responsibility of defending their tribe as the eldest male. He had always taken this job seriously and it forced him to grow up quickly in many ways. He spent a lot of time building defences and even trying to train up the younger members of his village. While his friend Aang taught Sokka’s sister the joys of being kids and having fun when they first met, Sokka refused to hear Aang out, telling him they didn’t have time for fun with a war going on. He was shown to change this outlook a little as the series went on and his goofy sense of humour and laid-back nature was able to shine more. The responsibility put on him at a young age also perhaps played a part in how protective he felt of his sister, Katara. This is proved when he violently tackles Aang after he accidentally burns her. His protective nature seems to extend to anyone he becomes close to, however, as he also proved himself willing to protect and help Aang after they became friends. He also did all he could to protect Yue, a princess he became very attached to, and was left feeling guilty and heartbroken when she had to sacrifice herself to save everyone.
Though often outwardly egotistical and the first to make jokes in any situation, Sokka holds many insecurities, especially in not living up to what he sees as the ideal “warrior” image. Much of this appears to come from his father, who Sokka looks up to and strives to be like. When Sokka was unable to effectively give an important speech, he expressed a lot of doubt in himself, especially when his father was able to give the speech very well and prepare everyone for battle. Sokka’s doubts also stem from how he feels in regards to his friends’ abilities. While his friends are able to bend the elements, he holds no such skills, and described himself while downcast and depressed as “just the guy in the group who’s regular,” believing himself unable to compare to his friends and of not as much use in the war they’re fighting. He’s able to overcome the self-doubt here by training as a swordsman, and though he isn’t immediately accomplished and suffers many setbacks he obviously has a lot of potential here and eventually becomes a great swordsman. His honesty is important to note here. He admitted to his sword Master – Master Piandao – that he thought himself as having a lot to learn when they first met, putting aside his egotistic attitude. While training in the art of the sword Sokka had to lie about who he was, and when he completed his training, being praised by Piandao, Sokka was honest. He admitted who he was and told Piandao he still believed himself unworthy.
Sokka is very sarcastic, and it usually ends up annoying his friends. He has quite a realistic, sometimes pessimistic, outlook on things. Often, Sokka will squash down any optimism his friends might put across, if he feels it pointless. When he asked his sister if she wanted him to “…be like you or say what I actually think?” she asked if he was calling her a liar. He replied that he was calling her an optimist, which was the “same thing, basically.” He cracks jokes often, though they are almost always bad and only he finds himself laughing at them, something he apparently gets from his dad. Sokka is very smart. Most plans the group have had to come up with on their way to stopping the Fire Lord came from Sokka. He was always looked upon as the one who came up with the plans and strategies. He loves to learn, and loves finding out how things work. He's a sceptic, preferring to believe in what he can see and feel, rather than faith and spirituality. This view is changed slightly when he meets Avatar Aang and sees the connection the Avatar has with the spirit world, but he always prefers solid logic and knowledge over putting faith into spirituality.
Abilities: It would actually be important to note what little supernatural ability Sokka has. Unlike his friends, and others in the world he comes from, Sokka is unable to bend any of the elements or commune with the spirit world. He described himself as “the guy who’s regular” and it plays a large part on who he is in the series.
One thing of note, however, is that from the canon point I’ll be taking Sokka he has become accomplished in the art of the sword, having been trained by a professional swordsman, and is able to defend himself effectively in battle. He’s also an excellent shot with his boomerang, which he’s had since he was very young.
